What is an uninterruptable power supply system (UPS)?

2.1 An uninterruptable power supply system (UPS) is defined as a device which for a specific period of time supplies continuous power to radio equipment independent of any power failures in the ship's main or emergency source of electric energy. .2 rechargeable accumulator batteries, complying with the requirements of annex 1.

What is the internal control supply of the ups?

The internal control supply of the UPS shall be available provided any of the power sources to the UPS are present. The inverter unit shall control the output of the UPS to maintain synchronism with the bypass voltage during variations in input frequency, within the specified tolerance limits.

What if the AC input power supply is below allowable limits?

Alarm and trip functions shall be provided in accordance with Table 6 as a minimum. In case the AC input power supply falls below allowable limits, the rectifier shall shut down. b When the AC input power supply resumes and remains within allowable limits, the rectifier shall start automatically and no reset is required.

Why should a ups be protected from a short-circuit?

The UPS should be so designed and constructed that it is protected against damage resulting from disconnecting the batteries or, with the battery disconnected, short-circuiting the UPS battery connections. If this protection is provided by electronic means it should automatically reset following removal of the open or short-circuit conditions.
